The update extends Quill's initial commitment to extending it from a static scene design platform to a platform that can handle dynamic animation scenes. The new update adds to the artist's ability to create and edit frame-by-frame animations within VR, as well as the ability to copy and reconstruct models, enabling Quill's beautiful creations.
Quill has a very unique visual style that is not suitable for every use case, but there are some things that are very appealing. It uses an old-fashioned animated style and is paired with a wispy 3D model.
This product was made in-house at Oculus just because they really need something similar and it doesn't exist yet. Last year, when Story Studio was shut down, the fate of the app was questioned by Oculus, indicating that the app won't receive more updates.
A Facebook blog post reads: "These tools open the door to a new narrative that moves and performs in scenes and environments, more active than ever, inspired by the early 1920s. Hand-drawn animation, but with the advancement of modern technology and native VR workflows, Quill Animation brings new degrees of freedom to artists in this rapidly emerging media."
In addition to today's updates, Facebook also details the features that will be further upgraded in the future, as they will explore how to get more animations in virtual reality through experiences such as virtual reality applications.
